Anthropic has some wonderful news for all of us who thought putting WiFi in every household appliance was a good idea: AI models may soon be capable of copying themselves from device to device without any human assistance.

Researchers tested whether smaller AI models could find vulnerable internet connected shit, move themselves onto it, and then continue spreading. Apparently some weaker models can already handle most of the individual steps, and stronger models were able to pull off the whole process when researchers lowered some of the security barriers. Because of this, Anthropic now thinks fully autonomous replication on commercial devices could be just months away.

"We should aim to harden our systems to make it difficult for such replicators to spread, but also prepare to deal with a world where they are here to stay," the Anthropic researchers wrote (are they trolling?)

The targets include smart ovens and cheap Android Tv boxes and shit like that. So yeah essentially we’re looking at a near future where you can just have a colony of AI worms inside your TV or toaster or even your dog. Just kidding on that last one lol.
